This is a measure of how much of pain this project might be.

OVERVIEW

Can’t find the other end of that wire?

Need to know where behind that wall or floor a wire is run?

A wire tracer (aka signal tracer) is just the tool for the job. This handy little tool pays for itself in the time saved avoiding a wire scavenger hunt.

These tracers connect to one end of a wire or cable using a transmitter that emits a tone that can be picked up by the receiver. Turn on the transmitter and then go hunting with the receiver – once it starts beeping or generating an audible tone, you’ve found your wire! You can use it to find the other end of wire that might be bundled with other unmarked wires or you can use it to find the path of the wire behind walls and floors.

Show Notes:

A wire tracer is an invaluable tool for finding the other end of a wire or for detecting the path of wires inside walls and ceilings.

In this video, Chris will demonstrate how to use a simple wire tracer on un-energized wires. Specialty tracers are required for “live wires” and are not demonstrated here. Never use the type of tracer in this video on energized wires of any type.

Purchase tip: Inexpensive wire tracers are much better at finding the other end of a wire. They do not typically perform well when trying to detect wires behind walls. Consider a more expensive model for that task. Product reviews are an invaluable when selecting a wire tracer.
