Garage door tune ups can cost anywhere from $50 to $120, but you don’t need to spend this much. It only takes about 15 minutes to perform and the cost of a can of lubricant.

Here are the basic steps:

  1. Detach the garage door opener from the garage door.
  2. Use your wrench or a socket to ensure all your hinges are tight to the garage door. You don’t need to use a lot of torque – just make sure they are a nice and snug.
  3. Next, take a lubricant such as Pro 44 or Blaster and apply it to all hinge joints and the roller pins. For the roller pins, spin the rollers and move them back and forth to spread around the lubricant.
  4. Now, lubricate the springs and bearing between the two springs. (if you only have one spring there should be a bearing on one end of it.
  5. Lubricate the pulleys on each end of the torsion bar. Be sure to lubricate the bearings on the end plates as well.
  6. Next, lubricate the track of your garage door opener.
  7. As a last step, open and close the door a few times. If the garage door does not stay open or if it doesn’t stay put at half open, you many need to adjust your springs. See the link below on how to do this.
