This is a measure of how much of pain this project might be.

OVERVIEW

Homeowners with a flat roof are eventually faced with a leak or a tear in the roof. Typically, a professional has to be called in due to the expensive equipment and special materials. This little secret will allow you to repair a membrane roof yourself.

Flat roofs are usually covered with a membrane. When these membranes tear, few homeowners know what to do other than call in a roofer. Some membranes are repaired with heat guns, tar, or complex patch kits not readily available to us average joes.

Well, there is an easy way to fix those tears and punctures for just about any type of membrane (this also works on other materials as well). RoofSeal by Eternabond is a godsend to us roofing mortals. This is easy to apply and [according to the manufacturer] will adhere to “EPDM, TPO, Hypalon, most PVC, modified, all metals, even copper and Kynar coated metals, tile, wood, concrete, etc.”

In this video, Chris applies RoofSeal to a TPO roof in these steps:

  1. Clean the area around the tear/puncture using denatured alcohol, acetone, lacquer thinner, or Eternabond’s EternaClean. Be sure to clean the area thoroughly. (If you are applying this to a painted surface do not use acetone or lacquer thinner.)
  2. Scuff up the area and surrounding area with an abrasive/scour pad.
  3. Cut a piece of RoofSeal that will extend beyond the tear by at least a couple of inches.
  4. Removing the liner of the RoofSeal and apply it to the area.
  5. Apply pressure. A steel roofer’s roller will work best and help work out or compress any air bubbles.
  6. Presto! You’re done.
